Oslo police are investigating a possible terrorist connection to an explosion at the US embassy in Norway that occurred overnight. However, they are also exploring other potential causes for the incident.
The blast, which took place around 1:00 am at the entrance to the embassy's consular section, resulted in no injuries and caused minor material damage. Authorities have confirmed that an "explosive device" was responsible for the blast, targeting the embassy. Specific details about the device have not been disclosed.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store condemned the incident as "very serious and completely unacceptable." He stated that he had discussed the matter with the US embassy's head in Oslo.
The aftermath of the explosion showed shattered glass outside the building, cracks in a thick glass door, dangling overhead lamps, and black marks on the ground near the door, likely from the blast.
Frode Larsen, head of the police's joint unit for investigation and intelligence, indicated that one possible scenario being considered is terrorism. However, he emphasized the need to remain open to other potential causes. Larsen mentioned during a news conference that the police had not identified any suspects yet but were actively searching for them.
Grete Lien Metlid, a police official in Oslo, hinted that an explosive device had been thrown at the embassy when questioned by reporters. However, she did not confirm if the device was a hand grenade, stating that details about the type of device used had not been disclosed.
