A deadly heat wave has disrupted Independence Day celebrations across the United States, leading to the cancellation of events in Washington, Philadelphia, and Colorado.
In Philadelphia, the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade and various festivities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Colorado were called off due to the scorching heat.
Washington, D.C. also saw cancellations, with the "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall temporarily closed as attendees suffered heat-related illnesses. The Washington Monument was shut to the public, delaying entry for the "A Capitol Fourth" concert.
Michael DelBene, CEO of parade organizer Wawa Welcome America, expressed regret over the cancellations, citing the dangerous heat conditions.
The heat wave, marked by record-breaking temperatures, led to numerous heat-related illnesses. The DC Fire and EMS Department reported that at least 11 people were hospitalized due to the extreme temperatures.
Over 165 million people in the U.S. East Coast and Midwest were affected by the heightened temperatures, with Washington and Philadelphia experiencing temperatures exceeding 104°F (40°C) and heat indices surpassing 110°F.
Organizers defended the cancellations, citing the ongoing extreme heat spell and the need to prioritize public safety.
