Mortar shell explosion in Tirah valley results in five fatalities
A tragic incident unfolded in Chapri locality of Tirah valley, District Khyber, as mortar shells, originating from an unidentified source, struck a residential area during the Iftar time, leading to the loss of five lives and injuries to seven others, according to security sources on Saturday.
The community was thrown into turmoil by the sudden attack, prompting residents to protest, calling for accountability and enhanced security measures.
Multiple mortar shells landed in close proximity to the local population, with one shell hitting a civilian pickup vehicle, claiming the lives of five individuals, including two children, and leaving several others wounded.
Initially, reports indicated four fatalities and three injuries, but officials later confirmed that one of the injured individuals had succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, bringing the death toll to five, while the number of injured rose to seven.
The deceased were identified as Mehran Khan, Muntazir Afridi, Khogai, and Akumat, all residents of Chapri. Additionally, authorities confirmed the passing of one of the injured victims during medical treatment.
The injured were promptly transported to Dogra Hospital for urgent medical attention before being referred to Peshawar for further care, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Security forces disclosed that the mortar shells were fired from an undisclosed location, prompting an investigation to identify those responsible for the deadly assault.
The shelling not only claimed lives but also caused significant damage to nearby residences and properties, inflicting financial hardships on affected families. Consequently, security measures in the area have been heightened in response to the attack.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, local residents staged a protest, placing one of the deceased bodies at Khyber Chowk in Bara Bazaar and initiating a sit-in. The demonstrators, including family members of the victims and concerned citizens, criticized the government for its perceived failure to maintain peace and called for an end to the senseless killing of innocent civilians.
