Republican Senator Steve Daines revealed on Wednesday that he will not run for reelection in Montana, altering the landscape of the state's upcoming Senate race.
Daines' announcement coincided with the closing of the candidate filing deadline, leaving Kurt Alme as the sole major Republican contender in the primary. Alme submitted his candidacy moments before the deadline and promptly secured an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
In a video message shared on social media, Daines expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Montana in the US House and Senate over the past 13 years, calling it the pinnacle of his professional career. He stated, "I'm thankful to God for enabling me to serve, but after careful consideration, I have chosen not to seek reelection."
The decision's timing sparked criticism from independent candidate Seth Bodnar, who argued that it curtailed competition in the race.
